The 2009 USA Women’s Marathon Championships were held this morning along the winding streets of Minneapolis, MN. The rolling course began adjacent the Metrodome and wrapped its way through parkways, lakes, rivers and tree-filled boulevards all the way to the state’s capitol in St. Paul. The region already abuzz with baseball fever (Twins still fighting for the last MLB playoff spot) had onlookers lining the streets by the thousands supporting Sunday’s big event.
Sally Meyerhoff finished 5th overall in 2:35:49. Arriving in Minneapolis on Thursday, the race marked Meyerhoff’s first marathon since winning the PF Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon in January. USATF handed out $72,500 in prize money for the event with Meyerhoff receiving $5,000 for fifth place.
The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon is the one, and only, opportunity in 2009 to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Women’s Marathon with a time of 2:46:00 or better. The women’s course record is 2:26:51, shared by Zinaida Semenova, RUS, in 2001 and Irina Permitina, RUS, in 2004.
